The combined issue (Numbers 2–3–4) of Volume 7 of the International Journal of Neurology (1970) was dedicated to the cerebellum. It opened with an editorial and an address by the editor, presenting an extensive and multidisciplinary exploration of cerebellar anatomy, physiology, pathology, and function in both experimental and clinical contexts.
The volume featured studies on cerebellar tumors in children (Geissinger and Bucy) and a historical review of John F. Fulton’s contributions to cerebellar research (Soriano). Experimental investigations included analyses of evoked cerebellar responses during drowsiness (Grimm and Frazee), cerebellar stimulation in cobalt model epilepsy (Grimm et al.), and cerebellar effects on cerebral activity (Snider, Mitra, and Sudilovsky).
Further research examined prolonged cerebellar post-effects (Passouant et al.), the neurophysiology of cerebellar motor control (Ito), and cerebello-thalamo-cortical pathways and feedback systems (Steriade; Blum). Morphological and developmental studies addressed ultrastructural organization of the developing cerebellum (Del Cerro and Snider), auditory projections and cerebello-hippocampal circuits (Sager et al.), and termination patterns of the olivocerebellar system (Dunsker et al.).
Clinical and functional papers covered spasticity and cerebellar involvement (Heimburger), effects of dentate nucleus cooling on motor behavior in monkeys (Horvath et al.), post-traumatic cerebellar syndromes (Gerstenbrand et al.), bilateral cerebellar hemispherectomy in ataxic patients (Kraus et al.), and ataxic dysarthria (Brown, Darley, and Aronson).
The issue concluded with book reviews and news, representing one of the most comprehensive mid-20th-century compilations on cerebellar research, integrating neurophysiological, anatomical, and clinical perspectives in the study of motor coordination and cerebellar function.
